going back to school

Mental health treatment is a positive step for teenagers. When they return to school, they deserve to have their privacy when talking with others about their experience. They can also benefit from support from their school. However, the school system environment can be challenging for teens to navigate for many reasons, including falling behind in assignments and missing class time, as well as managing rumors and talking to peers about their difficulties. It is usually very important that parents communicate with school personnel when a teen has been in the hospital or has special needs. Parents can request meetings with school teams/personnel (such as a school social worker or guidance counselor) designated to support the student at school. Accommodations such as a reduced work load may be possible to help students manage the demands of school during a challenging time. For students whose mental health considerably impacts their performance or access to education, parents may request a meeting to discuss increased supports and services. It can also be helpful for students to identify a trusted adult at school (e.g., school counselor) that the student may turn to for support when needed.
