parent guilt

Parents may react in different ways to their teens’ suicidal behavior. Some parents may experience feelings of guilt, and may even question whether or not they could have done something differently to prevent the suicidal behavior.  It is important for parents to understand that it is very difficult to predict suicidal behavior, and that teens have multiple influences in their lives (e.g., peers, social media, TV, school, and other family members).  In other words, teen suicidal behavior is most often the result of multiple factors.  If you are experiencing thoughts or feelings of guilt, please talk with your teen’s therapist or your own therapist about these concerns. Don’t let the guilt stop you from getting help for you or your teen.
