All children and adolescents experience stressful events at some point in their lives. However, some teens are exposed to events that are extremely upsetting or stressful. These types of experiences are referred to as traumatic events. Some children and adolescents who experience trauma may develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Children and adolescents who experience traumatic stress or who develop PTSD may be at greater risk for suicidal behavior.
